Welcome from Laura Hucks, Director of King’s Global Health Partnerships
Our model brings UK health workers to work in partnership with their peers in Somaliland, DRC, Zambia and Sierra Leone. The aim is to strengthen health systems, in those African countries, but also in the UK. The premise is that both partners can learn through this collaboration. We do not think that the UK has all the answers. The Covid pandemic exposed the fragility of health systems across the world - in richer powerful nations, as well as in countries classified as ‘low-income’. There is evidence to suggest that many countries on the African continent, with their experience of managing infectious diseases, had learnt valuable lessons which meant that they were better equipped to face the pandemic. The UK volunteer testimonies that we include in this issue make clear just how valuable collaboration and exchange between African and UK health professionals is, for those individuals but also for the wider NHS and for patients.
Our collaboration aims to benefit our partners not just as participants in capacity building processes, but as visionaries, strategists, decision makers, principal investigators, budget holders, trainers – in short, parties who have an equal, if not a greater, stake in the projects we undertake together. Fair and equitable partnerships are critically important to the success of our endeavour and what we are striving for.
