Seasons greetings from Laura Hucks, Director of King’s Global Health Partnerships
Of the approximately 45 million deaths in low and middle-income countries each year, an estimated 54% could be avoided by the development of effective emergency care. In our last newsletter of the year, we profile important work to improve the quality of care for patients who require rapid intervention for acute conditions, which, if left untreated, would lead to death or disability.

We are privileged to partner with many tenacious health workers on the frontline, who are working in extremely challenging circumstances. They are managing some of the highest rates of injury from road-traffic incidents; the highest rates of maternal and neonatal death due to complications in pregnancy and childbirth; and the highest rates of complications due to communicable diseases, including respiratory infections, malaria, and HIV. Health workers in Africa are also managing a rapidly growing burden of non-communicable diseases, such as stroke.

Together we are making good progress to improve the quality of healthcare for some of the most vulnerable patients in the world.  As we near the end of the year, the KGHP team would like to thank our closest collaborators who generously share their time and expertise – our partners in DR Congo, Sierra Leone, Somaliland and Zambia; our NHS volunteers; our funders and supporters. We wish you all a Merry Christmas, and a happy and healthy 2023.
