KGHP
Newsletter

Welcome from Andrew Leather, Director of King’s Global Health Partnerships
I am delighted that this newsletter captures a number of good news stories which we all need as we approach the end of such a challenging year!

CRI Foundation is such an important funder with a deep understanding of our work and a desire to see us grow as an organisation – so it is great that they have renewed and extended funding for our postgraduate medical education (PGME) work. We now have a clear framework for progressing this important work and accompanying our partners as they establish or strengthen in-country PGME.

We completed 25 years of the Somaliland partnership in the summer. We presented the National Quality Improvement Programme (NQIP) in Doha at the Qatar Ministry of Public Health's Patient Safety Conference in September, and at the QuEST Network's conference on Science for Health Systems in St Louis in October, with Somaliland Ministry of Health Development colleagues and we will share more on the impact of this programme next time. For now, we wanted to highlight the mental health research in Somaliland which is described by Dr Chris Willott.

It is always difficult to pick one story from all the work in Sierra Leone. However, it seems fitting to focus on the impact of the Sierra Leone fellowship programme and the work of our amazing clinical volunteers – ably supported by the in-country team.

As always we like to feature an individual from across our partnerships. This time two brilliant colleagues instead of one! Do read our focus on Hodan Adam Mohamoud, Director of Public Hospitals and Focal Point for NQIP at the Somaliland Ministry of Health Development; and do also celebrate with us the achievements of Elizabeth Tissingh – recently awarded an MBE for her leadership of the DRC partnership.

Enjoy reading and thank you for your interest and support for KGHP. Wishing you all a festive break with family and friends.

KGHP Fellowships: Strengthening Health Systems in Sierra Leone and the UK

Since 2023, The Saving Lives in Sierra Leone III (SLiSL III) programme has brought together a consortium of international and national partners working with the Ministry of Health and Sanitation to reduce maternal, newborn and child mortality across six districts. Through our Global Health Fellowships, KGHP brings experienced doctors, nurses, midwives and allied health professionals from the UK to Sierra Leone for one-year placements, embedded within the communities they serve and work alongside. Two years into the programme, we review the contributions the Fellows have made in building the capacity of the clinical workforce and embedding sustainable education systems that will serve Sierra Leone for years to come.
